Finding the Right Dose of L-Arginine

The appropriate dosage of L-Arginine to take daily is determined by a number of factors, including the user’s age and physical condition, and its usage.

A general guideline for daily use determined by the University of Maryland Medical Center is two to eight grams (up to 8,000 mg).

Here are some recommended doses for particular conditions.

However, since the amount of L-Arginine may vary for a particular product, make sure to read the labels to get accurate amounts and ensure the appropriate dosage is taken.

You should also talk with your doctor before starting any L-Arginine therapy.

For Congestive Heart Failure, from 600 to 20,000 mg can be taken daily to relieve symptoms, based on the recommendation of a health professional.

Important: This should ideally be divided into three doses a day.

For Angina Pectoris (chest pains due to coronary artery disease), a daily dosage of 900 to 1,800 mg is recommended, in three daily doses of up to 600 mg.

For the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction, a daily dosage of up to 5,000 mg a day is recommended.

For type-2 diabetes, it should be nine grams of L-Arginine daily, divided into three doses of 3 g. This dosage may also be used to treat complications of diabetes such as peripheral neuropathy. A cream containing 4mg/sq. cm. of L-Arginine may also be applied to the extremities (feet) in the morning and evening.

Those taking L-Arginine for improved performance during workouts should not take more than 6 g beforehand. This can be added to a 500 ml beverage, such as Gatorade, to make it easier to take. To maintain elevated doses of the amino acid throughout the day, up to 18 g can be taken daily, which must be divided into three equal doses. Do not take more than 10 g at a time since it can cause diarrhea.
